 Preserving our Cultural Identity

Stewards of our Past

View the Future (VfT) is committed to honoring and sustaining the local cultural and historical heritage that define our community by working to protect and celebrate our cultural legacy, ensuring it endures for future generations.

Amanda Trail

VtF is dedicated to projects like the Amanda Trail that is on the Kittel Easement.  This trail honors the memory of Amanda, a blind Coos woman who suffered injustices during the reservation years in the 1860s.

Amanda’s story has left a profound spiritual impact on residents and visitors to the Yachats area. Her legacy is honored through the Amanda Trail, the Amanda statue, the naming of Amanda Creek, the creation of the Amanda Gathering Area, local interpretive signs, and three Amanda Bridges. Visiting this area offers more than just beautiful scenery; it provides an experience that resonates deeply, blending education with a sense of reverence and connection to the past. View the Future is honored to serve as stewards of the Amanda statue and takes great pride in preserving her memory.

To preserve Amanda's story, along with the stories of others and our local history, we sponsor various community initiatives and collect & document local stories to safeguard our heritage.

Land Acknowledgments

Land acknowledgment is a longstanding tradition among Native communities, serving as a meaningful way to resist the erasure of Indigenous histories and honor the first peoples of the land. Common in countries like New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and among U.S. tribal nations, it often accompanies events and gatherings to recognize the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of the area.

Aligned with View the Future's mission, we collaborate with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, descendants of this region's first people. Each tribe's historical truth is distinct, and so are their Land Acknowledgments. We encourage you to explore and reflect upon these acknowledgments to deepen your understanding.
